Duplex Vascular Ultrasound Image

Duplex ultrasound involves using high-frequency sound waves to check the speed of your blood flow and the structure of the leg veins.

If you’re wondering about the name, duplex refers to the fact that 2 modes of ultrasound are used. Those modes are Doppler and B-mode.

As a team, the B-mode is the one in charge of obtaining an image of the vessel of interest. On the one hand, the Doppler mode is the one in charge of evaluating the velocity and direction of blood flow in the vessel that is under study. Thanks to this test, the vascular specialists are able to see how blood moves through your arteries and veins and to detect any medical issues.

Types of duplex ultrasound

There are at least 4 types of duplex ultrasound exams. The difference depends on the area to be examined by your specialists. In this form, you can notice that those tests include:

  • Arterial and venous duplex ultrasound of your abdomen. Through this type of duplex ultrasound, your doctor will examine the blood vessels and blood flow in your abdominal area.
  • Duplex Ultrasound of the extremities. As the test in the abdominal area, the duplex ultrasound examines your arms and legs. This is one of the most common tests since extremities are the parts of the body that are most commonly affected by artery diseases.
  • Carotid duplex ultrasound at the carotid artery in the neck. This test helps your specialists to measure and to evaluate the flow of blood that goes to your brain.
  • Renal Duplex ultrasound. This helps your doctors to evaluate your kidneys and their blood vessels.
