March is National Kidney Monthâ
Chronic Kidney disease is a serious condition affecting over 200,000 people living in New Jersey. Take time this month to learn how to take care of your kidneys. You are more likely to develop Chronic Kidney Disease if you have diabetes, high blood pressure, heart disease or a family history of kidney failure.
Take care of your kidneys and overall health by practicing the following:
Stay Hydrated: If you need help increasing your water intake try carrying a bottle of water with you and drink a glass of water before each meal.
Get Enough Sleep Each Night: Adults should aim for 7 â 8 hours of sleep.
Get Physical Activity Each Day: With the days getting warmer, get outside and take a walk. Just 30 minutes of exercise each day benefits you and your kidneys. *
*Please talk to your physician before starting an exercise routine.
Eat Healthy: Start by trading some of those salty or sugary snacks with healthy fruit or vegetables. Prepare healthy snacks ahead of time so you can just grab them instead of your usual snack.
Reduce Stress: Stress can lead to kidney damage and other health issues. Take time every day to relax and get your stress under control. Whether it is sitting outside on a bench, meditating or other relaxation techniques, make time to relax each day.
Know your Risks: When you have kidney disease you are at risk for other chronic diseases like cardiovascular disease and peripheral arterial disease.
The Connection Between Kidney Disease and PAD
People with kidney disease also have a higher risk of developing Peripheral Arterial Disease because they have many of the same risk factors.
Atherosclerosis: The process that leads to both kidney disease and PAD often involves the buildup of plaque in the blood vessels, which affects both the heart and kidneys, as well as the arteries in the legs.
Diabetes and Hypertension: Both of these conditions are leading causes of both kidney disease and PAD. Poor blood sugar control (in diabetes) and high blood pressure can damage blood vessels, leading to kidney dysfunction and reduced blood flow in the legs.
